The Dutch Cycling Infrastructure – A Model for the World

In the low-lying lands of the Netherlands (Holland), a transportation revolution has been quietly taking place for decades. It does not involve high-speed trains or futuristic flying cars; rather, it’s firmly grounded on two wheels. The Dutch cycling infrastructure, often dubbed the best in the world, stands as a model of urban planning, sustainability, and forward-thinking transportation policy. In this article, we will pedal our way through the impressive world of Dutch cycling infrastructure and explore what makes it a global benchmark.

A Culture of Cycling in Holland

To begin with, cycling is not just a mode of transportation in the Netherlands; it’s a way of life. The Dutch have a long history of cycling. Yet, it wasn’t until the mid-20th century that their government and urban planners started taking it seriously. Today, the Netherlands boasts a network of cycling paths that stretches over 35,000 kilometers, connecting cities, towns, and even remote countryside areas. It’s not just an activity done for sports – whether you go to a bar, to a lecture, or to work, using a bike is the default mode of transportation for the Dutch, which is why they build their urban design around it.

I moved to the Netherlands in 2022 and – as you can imagine – one of the things I first did was to get a bike. Years before making the move, when I was growing up in Bulgaria, I would occasionally ride a bike with my friends, but as we entered high school, we all stopped doing it. It’s not common for adults to cycle there (and in most of the world). Despite my desire to ride a bike, the lack of infrastructure in Bulgaria discouraged me from cycling and I found myself not having ridden a bike for about 10 years. The good news is you never forget how to ride it. The bad is I was the slowest person in the lane when I took my bike here, and several elderly ladies overtook me immediately… But hey, it gets better!

Cycling Highways: Separate and Safe

One of the key features of Dutch cycling infrastructure is the extensive network of dedicated cycling paths. These paths are often physically separated from motorized traffic, creating a safe environment for cyclists. The Dutch have adopted the “strict liability” principle. In a nutshell, it means that in the event of a collision between a cyclist and a motorist, the motorist is almost always considered at fault. This leads to cautious driving and ensures that drivers protect cyclists.

Bicycle-Friendly Cities for Cycling in Holland

There likely isn’t a single city or village in the whole country without good infrastructure, yet some stand are leaders in this area. Utrecht, one of the Netherlands’ oldest and most picturesque cities, serves as a shining example of a bicycle-friendly city. In recent years, Utrecht unveiled the world’s largest bicycle parking facility at its central train station, capable of housing over 12,000 bikes (see below). In effect, this not only eases the stress of daily commuting but also encourages the use of public transportation and cycling.

Innovative Intersections: Dutch-Style Roundabouts

Dutch roundabouts have a unique feature that sets them apart from those found in other countries: they prioritize cyclists. Cyclists have the right of way, and the roundabouts are designed to accommodate them. This approach ensures that cyclists don’t need to dismount at intersections, further promoting the use of bicycles for daily travel.

Sustainability and Health Benefits

The cycling culture in Holland isn’t just about efficient transportation; it also champions environmental sustainability and health. By cycling, the Dutch reduce their carbon footprint, alleviate traffic congestion, and lower the demand for car parking spaces. Furthermore, cycling promotes physical activity, contributing to the well-being of the Dutch population. The Netherlands is the eighth-healthiest country on the planet,

The higher the modal share of walking, cycling, and public transport the more sustainable the transport system is.

Inspiring the World: Lessons from Dutch Cycling Infrastructure

The cycling infrastructure in the Netherlands provides valuable lessons for the rest of the world. By investing in dedicated cycling paths and creating safe cycling environments, we can reduce traffic congestion. Moreover, governments can promote a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle. The achievements of Dutch cities, such as Utrecht, Amsterdam, and Groningen, serve as an inspiration for urban planners and policymakers. Thanks to them, tourists spend cycling holidays in Holland. They are an opportunity for everyone to explore the picturesque cities and canals on two wheels.

As cities worldwide grapple with issues of congestion, pollution, and urban mobility, the Dutch cycling model offers a solution. It stands as a testament to what is possible to achieve, making use of biking lanes and 15-minute-cities. Furthermore, it illustrates how a well-thought-out and dedicated approach to cycling infrastructure can transform urban landscapes. In turn, this improves the quality of life for everyone. So, perhaps it’s time to take a page from the Dutch playbook and embrace the transformative power of two wheels.
